Regulation of Light Energy Distribution between Photosynthetic Pigment Systems; a Possible Role of Leaf Anatomy
نویسنده
چکیده
Photosynthetic Pigments, Energy Distribution, Leaf Anatomy The complex anatomical structure of an intact leaf results in a distribution of photosynthetically active energy between photosynthetic pigments which is different from that observed in isolated chloroplasts. The variance is due mainly to scattering at the gas-liquid interface between cells and intercellular space which tends to increase light absorption by the long wavelength absorbing pigments through secondary fluorescence. Evidence is given in support of an active use of this feature by the higher plant to regulate energy flow at the photophysical level of light absorption.

Light-harvesting mutants show differential gene expression upon shift to high light as a consequence of photosynthetic redox and reactive oxygen species metabolism.
The amount of light energy that is harvested and directed to the photosynthetic machinery is regulated in order to control the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaf tissues. ROS have important roles as signalling factors that instigate and mediate a range of cellular responses, suggesting that the mechanisms regulating light-harvesting and photosynthetic energy transduction also a...
متن کاملImpact of light limitation on seagrasses
Seagrass distribution is controlled by light availability, especially at the deepest edge of the meadow. Light attenuation due to both natural and anthropogenically-driven processes leads to reduced photosynthesis. Adaptation allows seagrasses to exist under these sub-optimal conditions. Understanding the minimum quantum requirements for growth (MQR) is revealed when light conditions are insuff...

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of water deficit stress on chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) characteristics of photosystem II (PSII) and pigment contents in two rootstock seedlings (Pistacia atlantica L. and P. khinjuk L.). Three levels of soil water potential (Ψs) was used, including WWD (-0.05 MPa), MWD (-0.7 MPa) and SWD (-1.5 MPa). It was found that water stress increased the...

Potassium is a major nutrient which may play an important role in many processes such as ion homeostasis in plant cells and osmotic adjustment of guard cells during stomatal opening and closing. Pathumthani 1 (PT1) rice has been reported as being a salt sensitive cultivar and has been selected as a model plant in this study to investigate the possibility of improving the osmotic potential, pigm...

Excitation Dynamics and Relaxation in Molecular Aggregates and Photosynthetic Pigment-Protein Complexes In photosynthesis the light-harvesting complexes are responsible for efficient excitation delivery to reactions centers responsible for conversion of the absorbed energy into the trans-membrane potential. This is the reason why the concept of photosynthetic antenna is widely used by describin...
